AquaClear 70 vs 110: Flow, Size & Tank Fit
The current Fluval AC70 and AC110 share the same core AC Series filtration concept, so the useful question is whether the larger AC110 solves a real sizing, flow or media-capacity need. This research-based comparison uses current Fluval documentation and product-identity evidence checked September 25, 2026, without treating Amazon price or availability as static. PetGearReport has not physically tested these filters, measured installed flow or noise, or observed long-term durability.

#1 · Our PickBest fit in the 60–70 gal overlap
Fluval AC70 Power Filter
Best for: 40–70 gallon aquariums, especially the 60–70 gallon overlap, where the smaller body and 7W draw matter more than the AC110's additional range and flow specification
What we like
- Fluval rates it for 40–70 US Gal aquariums
- 300 US GPH Max. Flow Rate at 7W
- 8.5 x 6.1 x 8.6-inch body is substantially smaller than the AC110
- Current 4-stage filtration, CycleGuard and refiltration architecture
- Includes intake sponge, Bio-Foam, BIOMAX and Activated Carbon
What we don't
- 70-gallon upper manufacturer limit is lower than the AC110's 110 gallons
- 300 GPH Max. Flow Rate is 200 GPH below the AC110
- Ships with one BIOMAX and one Activated Carbon insert rather than two of each

Fluval identifies the current AC70 as Item # 19615 / UPC 015561196154 for 40–70 US Gal / 152–265 L aquariums. The manufacturer publishes a Max. Flow Rate of 300 US GPH / 1136 LPH, 7W at 120V/60Hz and dimensions of 8.5 x 6.1 x 8.6 inches. Those are manufacturer specifications, not PetGearReport measurements. The current AC70 uses 4-stage filtration with a pre-filter stage, chemical stage, biological stage and mechanical stage. Fluval also documents CycleGuard, adjustable flow and patented refiltration. The included media list shows one intake sponge, one Bio-Foam, one BIOMAX and one Activated Carbon insert. Product identity evidence checked September 25, 2026: B0DCGB5T4Y matched Fluval AC70 / item 19615 / UPC 015561196154, without freezing current Amazon price or availability.
Choose the AC70 when its 40–70-gallon envelope already covers the aquarium and the smaller 8.5 x 6.1 x 8.6-inch body is more useful than the AC110's extra capacity.

Fluval AC110 Power Filter
Best for: 60–110 gallon aquariums where the higher 110-gallon ceiling, 500 GPH Max. Flow Rate or larger media package solves a specific need and the larger body fits
What we like
- Fluval rates it for 60–110 US Gal aquariums
- 500 US GPH Max. Flow Rate
- Current 4-stage filtration, CycleGuard and refiltration architecture
- Ships with two BIOMAX and two Activated Carbon inserts
- Larger 13.6 x 6.9 x 9.2-inch body supports the larger filter platform
What we don't
- 14W draw is double the AC70's 7W
- Body is much longer than the AC70
- Extra capacity is unnecessary if the AC70 already covers the aquarium and filtration plan

Fluval identifies the current AC110 as Item # 19620 / UPC 015561196208 for 60–110 US Gal / 227–416 L aquariums. It publishes a Max. Flow Rate of 500 US GPH / 1892 LPH, 14W at 120V/60Hz and dimensions of 13.6 x 6.9 x 9.2 inches. The AC110 shares the current AC Series 4-stage filtration concept, CycleGuard, adjustable flow and patented refiltration system. Fluval's current included-media table lists one intake sponge and one Bio-Foam, plus two BIOMAX and two Activated Carbon inserts for the AC110. Product identity evidence checked September 25, 2026: B000260FV6 matched the AquaClear 110 / 60–110 gallon product identity; Fluval identifies the current AC110 as item 19620 / UPC 015561196208, without freezing current Amazon price or availability. The reason to move up is capacity and range, not an assumption that the larger filter is universally better.
Choose the AC110 when the 110-gallon ceiling, 500-GPH Max. Flow Rate or larger media package solves a real requirement. It is not automatically the better choice inside the shared 60–70 gallon range.

PetGearReport has not physically tested the AC70 or AC110, measured their installed water flow, sound level, priming behavior, debris capture or long-term durability. We compared current Fluval model identity, aquarium-capacity guidance, same-name Max. Flow Rate specifications, wattage, dimensions, current media architecture, included media, maintenance features and current public product-identity evidence. Amazon pricing, temporary availability and customer-star ratings were not scoring inputs.
The displayed 1–10 number is a PetGearReport research score, rounded to the nearest whole number from the same five weighted categories for both filters:
- Tank fit & hydraulic documentation — 25%: manufacturer aquarium range and the same-family Max. Flow Rate specification.
- Media architecture & capacity — 25%: 4-stage path, included media quantity and reusable-media access.
- Physical fit & installation — 20%: body dimensions, rim space and maintenance access.
- Energy & flow control — 15%: 120V wattage, adjustable flow and refiltration behavior.
- Documentation & parts support — 15%: current official model identity, manuals and replacement-media support.
| Filter | Tank fit / hydraulics 25% | Media architecture 25% | Physical fit 20% | Energy / control 15% | Docs / parts 15% | Weighted result | Published score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fluval AC70 | 9 | 9 | 10 | 10 | 9 | 9.35 | 9/10 |
| Fluval AC110 | 10 | 10 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 8.95 | 9/10 |
Both round to 9/10. The AC70 appears first because this page treats right-sizing in the 60–70 gallon overlap as the default: if the AC70 already covers the aquarium, the AC110’s larger body and double power draw need to solve a specific capacity or flow requirement. The AC110 becomes the stronger fit when its 110-gallon ceiling or 500-GPH Max. Flow Rate is actually needed.
Quick verdict
Choose the AC70 when the aquarium is inside its 40–70 gallon manufacturer range and the 300 US GPH Max. Flow Rate, 7W draw and 8.5 x 6.1 x 8.6-inch body fit the setup.
Choose the AC110 when the aquarium or filtration plan needs the 60–110 gallon envelope, 500 US GPH Max. Flow Rate or larger included-media package. It uses 14W and measures 13.6 x 6.9 x 9.2 inches, so it is not automatically the better choice for a tank that also fits the AC70.

Because Fluval uses the same manufacturer label — Max. Flow Rate — for both current models, 300 versus 500 GPH is a cleaner same-family specification comparison than mixing differently named hydraulic metrics across brands. These are still manufacturer figures, not PetGearReport measurements of installed aquarium flow.
Tank-size decision map: 40, 55, 60, 70, 75, 90 & 110 gallons
Fluval’s current range labels create a simple boundary map before you consider livestock, media loading, maintenance or localized current. AC110 starts at 60 US gallons in Fluval’s published aquarium range, while AC70 stops at 70 US gallons.
| Nominal tank size | AC70 40–70 US gal | AC110 60–110 US gal | What the manufacturer ranges say |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 gal | Inside range | Below published lower boundary | AC70 is the only one of these two inside Fluval’s stated range |
| 55 gal | Inside range | Below published lower boundary | AC70 is the only one of these two inside Fluval’s stated range |
| 60 gal | Inside range | Inside range | Both models fall inside their published ranges |
| 70 gal | At published ceiling | Inside range | Both models fall inside their published ranges |
| 75 gal | Above published ceiling | Inside range | AC110 is the only one of these two inside Fluval’s stated range |
| 90 gal | Above published ceiling | Inside range | AC110 is the only one of these two inside Fluval’s stated range |
| 110 gal | Above published ceiling | At published ceiling | AC110 is the only one of these two inside Fluval’s stated range |
This is a boundary check, not a stocking calculator: a manufacturer range is not a stocking or bioload guarantee. Fish current tolerance, waste production, aquascape resistance, media condition and maintenance frequency still determine whether the installation makes sense.
For broader sizing context, use the aquarium filter sizing & flow calculator, which keeps manufacturer hydraulic labels separate rather than treating unlike numbers as interchangeable.
Derived max-flow arithmetic inside the 60–70 gallon overlap
Because Fluval publishes the same Max. Flow Rate label for both models, you can use simple arithmetic to understand the headline-flow difference inside the overlap:
| Tank size | AC70: 300 GPH ÷ tank volume | AC110: 500 GPH ÷ tank volume |
|---|---|---|
| 60 gal | 5.00× | 8.33× |
| 70 gal | 4.29× | 7.14× |
These values are simple division of the manufacturer Max. Flow Rate by nominal tank volume. They are not measured turnover, do not account for media loading or flow adjustment, and are not a universal turnover target. They are only a normalized way to see how far apart the two published maximum-flow figures are at the same nominal tank size.
The 60–70 gallon overlap is the real decision zone
The AC70 is rated for 40–70 gallons, while the AC110 is rated for 60–110 gallons. That creates a 60–70 gallon overlap where both models fall inside Fluval’s current manufacturer guidance.
Inside that overlap, the AC110’s larger number does not automatically make it the better purchase. It adds 200 GPH of published Max. Flow Rate and extends the upper aquarium ceiling to 110 gallons, but it also doubles the 120V wattage from 7W to 14W and increases body length from 8.5 to 13.6 inches.
For general sizing context, use our aquarium filter size guide. Tank volume is only the first constraint; livestock current tolerance, media loading, layout and service access still matter.
Flow: 300 vs 500 GPH under the same Fluval label
Fluval publishes 300 US GPH for the AC70 and 500 US GPH for the AC110, both under Max. Flow Rate. The 200 GPH difference is therefore directly comparable as a same-family manufacturer specification.
That does not mean PetGearReport measured 300 or 500 GPH in a working aquarium. Installed flow can change with media condition, flow adjustment, intake restriction and maintenance state. Use the numbers to understand the models’ documented hydraulic class, not as a universal guarantee of real tank circulation.
Shared AC architecture, with a larger AC110 media package
Both current models use 4-stage filtration, CycleGuard, adjustable flow and Fluval’s patented refiltration system. Both include an intake sponge and Bio-Foam, and both use reusable BIOMAX and Activated Carbon media rather than a single disposable all-in-one cartridge.
The included-media quantity differs. Fluval’s current AC Series table lists one BIOMAX and one Activated Carbon insert for the AC70, versus two BIOMAX and two Activated Carbon inserts for the AC110. That supports the AC110’s larger physical platform, but more included media is useful only when the aquarium and maintenance plan benefit from it.
Our aquarium filter media guide explains mechanical, biological and optional chemical-media roles without assuming every aquarium needs the same quantity or replacement schedule.
Physical fit and power draw
The AC70 measures 8.5 x 6.1 x 8.6 inches. The AC110 is 13.6 x 6.9 x 9.2 inches, making body length the most obvious fit difference. Check lid hinges, braces, light mounts, rear-wall clearance and hand access for basket service before ordering.
The power difference is also straightforward in Fluval’s current 120V specifications: 7W for the AC70 versus 14W for the AC110. That is not a reason to undersize filtration, but it is another reason not to choose the larger model when its extra capacity provides no useful benefit.
A documentation nuance: do not extend AC70-only motor claims to AC110
Fluval’s current AC Series page presents the re-engineered precision motor design and related sound-dampening cover callouts with an explicit AC20/AC30/AC50/AC70 model limitation. Those specific model-limited callouts are not listed for the AC110 on the comparison page.
That does not prove the AC110 is noisy. It means PetGearReport should not silently assign AC20–70-only hardware claims to the AC110. We have not measured sound levels for either model, so noise is not used as a scored advantage here.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the AC70 if:
- the aquarium falls inside Fluval’s 40–70-gallon range;
- you are in the 60–70 gallon overlap and do not need the AC110’s extra hydraulic class;
- the 8.5-inch body length fits the rim/rear space more comfortably;
- the 7W draw and current 4-stage media package meet the plan;
- 300 GPH Max. Flow Rate is sufficient for the intended setup.
Choose the AC110 if:
- the aquarium exceeds 70 gallons but remains inside Fluval’s 110-gallon ceiling;
- the setup specifically benefits from the 500 GPH Max. Flow Rate class;
- the larger included BIOMAX and Activated Carbon quantity is useful;
- the 13.6 x 6.9 x 9.2-inch body fits without compromising lid, brace or service access;
- the 14W draw is acceptable for the capacity gained.

Exact product identity verification
Product identity evidence checked September 25, 2026: B0DCGB5T4Y matched Fluval AC70 / item 19615 / UPC 015561196154. For the larger model, B000260FV6 matched the AquaClear 110 / 60–110 gallon product identity, while Fluval identifies the current AC110 as item 19620 / UPC 015561196208, without freezing current Amazon price or availability.
The AC110 evidence is intentionally stated in two steps: public catalog evidence maps the ASIN to the AquaClear 110 / 60–110 gallon product, while Fluval separately supplies the current item and UPC identifiers. This avoids claiming a direct ASIN-to-UPC cross-key that the independent catalog evidence does not explicitly publish. No direct Amazon product-page probe was used for this refresh.

Frequently asked questions
Is the AquaClear 110 always better than the 70?
No. The AC110 has a larger manufacturer aquarium envelope and higher published Max. Flow Rate, but it also uses 14W instead of 7W and has a much larger body. In the 60–70 gallon overlap, the AC70 may be the cleaner fit if its range, flow and media package already meet the aquarium's needs.
Which should I choose for a 60- or 70-gallon aquarium?
Both current Fluval ranges cover 60–70 gallons: AC70 is rated for 40–70 US Gal and AC110 for 60–110 US Gal. That overlap should be decided by livestock current tolerance, desired media capacity, available rim/rear space and whether the AC110's additional flow and size solve a real requirement.
How much more flow does the AC110 publish?
Fluval publishes 500 US GPH Max. Flow Rate for the AC110 and 300 US GPH for the AC70, a 200 GPH difference under the same manufacturer label. PetGearReport has not measured installed flow, so these figures should not be converted into a claim about actual aquarium circulation after media loading and flow adjustment.
Do the AC70 and AC110 use the same media system?
They share the current AC Series 4-stage concept, CycleGuard and refiltration architecture. The included-media quantity differs: Fluval lists one BIOMAX and one Activated Carbon insert for the AC70, versus two BIOMAX and two Activated Carbon inserts for the AC110, with one intake sponge and one Bio-Foam on both.
