Seachem Tidal 55 vs 75: Flow, Media Capacity & Tank Fit
The Seachem Tidal 55 and Tidal 75 use the same core HOB architecture, so this is primarily a sizing decision rather than a feature-set contest. This research-based comparison uses current Seachem documentation and exact product-identity evidence checked September 24, 2026. PetGearReport has not physically tested these filters, measured installed flow or noise, or observed long-term durability.

What we don't
- 55-gallon ceiling is lower than the Tidal 75's 75-gallon ceiling
- 1.2 L filter volume is 0.7 L less than the 75
- 250 GPH Flow Rate is 100 GPH lower than the 75

Seachem specifies the Tidal 55 for aquariums up to 55 US gallons / 200 L, with a 250 US GPH / 1000 L/h Flow Rate, 1.2 Liters of filter volume and 6W draw at 120V. Those are manufacturer specifications, not PetGearReport measurements. The Tidal 55 shares the core Tidal design used by the 75: built-in surface skimmer, intake flow regulation between surface and submerged intake, front flow regulation, bottom-to-top media flow, self-priming pump, maintenance alert and one large open media basket. Seachem includes foam plus 250 mL of Matrix biomedia. Product identity evidence checked September 24, 2026: B01M6Z59E9 matched Seachem Tidal 55, without freezing current Amazon price or availability.
Choose the Tidal 55 when its 55-gallon ceiling, 1.2 L basket and 250 GPH Flow Rate already fit the aquarium. It keeps the same core Tidal controls and service architecture while using less power and less rear clearance.

Seachem Tidal 75 Power Filter
Best for: Aquariums that need the 75-gallon ceiling, additional media volume or 350 GPH Flow Rate and can accommodate the larger body
What we like
- Seachem rates it for aquariums up to 75 US gallons
- 350 US GPH Flow Rate with 1.9 Liters of filter volume
- Adds 0.7 L of filter volume and 100 GPH over the 55
- Same surface skimmer, intake flow regulation, self-priming pump and maintenance alert architecture as the 55
- Ships with 350 mL of Matrix biomedia
What we don't
- 8W draw is 2W higher than the Tidal 55
- Requires 3 1/2 inches of wall clearance instead of 3 inches
- Seachem publishes conflicting 9 3/8-inch and 10 1/8-inch unit-length figures on current pages

Seachem specifies the Tidal 75 for aquariums up to 75 US gallons / 300 L, with a 350 US GPH / 1500 L/h Flow Rate, 1.9 Liters of filter volume and 8W draw at 120V. The feature set is materially the same as the Tidal 55: surface skimmer, intake flow regulation, front flow control, bottom-to-top media path, self-priming pump, maintenance alert and one large open media basket. The 75 ships with foam plus 350 mL of Matrix biomedia. Product identity evidence checked September 24, 2026: B01MCVYEOT matched Seachem Tidal 75, without freezing current Amazon price or availability. The reason to move up is capacity, not a different filtration concept.
Choose the Tidal 75 when its 75-gallon ceiling, extra 0.7 L of media capacity or extra 100 GPH solves a real sizing need. It is not automatically the better choice when the Tidal 55 already covers the aquarium.

PetGearReport has not physically tested the Tidal 55 or 75, measured their installed water flow, noise, priming reliability, debris capture or long-term durability. We compared current Seachem specifications, aquarium-capacity guidance, same-family Flow Rate labels, filter volume, power draw, physical clearance, shared maintenance architecture, included media and current public product-identity evidence. Amazon pricing, temporary availability and customer-star ratings were not scoring inputs.
The displayed 1–10 number is a PetGearReport research score, rounded to the nearest whole number from the same five weighted categories for both filters:
- Tank fit & hydraulic documentation — 25%: manufacturer aquarium ceiling and clarity of the published Flow Rate.
- Media capacity & architecture — 25%: filter volume, included Matrix amount and the shared open-basket flow path.
- Physical fit & clearance — 20%: body size, wall clearance, tank-trim clearance and documentation consistency.
- Energy & control — 15%: 120V wattage plus the shared flow/intake controls.
- Documentation & parts support — 15%: current official pages, manuals and replacement-media support.
| Filter | Tank fit / hydraulics 25% | Media capacity 25% | Physical fit 20% | Energy / control 15% | Docs / parts 15% | Weighted result | Published score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seachem Tidal 55 | 9 | 8 | 10 | 10 | 9 | 9.10 | 9/10 |
| Seachem Tidal 75 | 9 | 9 | 8 | 9 | 9 | 8.85 | 9/10 |
Both round to 9/10 because they use the same well-documented architecture and solve adjacent sizing needs. The Tidal 55 appears first because this page treats right-sizing as the default: if the 55-gallon ceiling and 1.2 L filter volume already fit the aquarium, the larger model does not earn an automatic win. The Tidal 75 becomes the stronger fit when its extra range, flow or media volume solves a real requirement.
Quick verdict
Choose the Tidal 55 when the aquarium is within its up-to-55-gallon manufacturer envelope and its 250 US GPH Flow Rate, 1.2 Liters of filter volume and 6W draw already fit the plan.
Choose the Tidal 75 when the aquarium or media plan needs the 75-gallon ceiling, 350 US GPH Flow Rate or 1.9 Liters of filter volume. Those are meaningful capacity increases, but the 75 is not automatically the better choice for every aquarium that also fits the 55.

Inside the Tidal 55 ceiling, moving to the 75 is justified only when the extra flow, media volume or future tank-size headroom solves a real requirement. The Tidal 75 adds capacity, power draw and clearance requirements; it does not add a new filtration architecture.
The 55-gallon ceiling vs the 75-gallon ceiling
The Tidal 55 is documented for aquariums up to 55 US gallons, while the Tidal 75 extends that manufacturer ceiling to 75 US gallons. That 20-gallon difference is the first sizing boundary to check.
If the aquarium is above the Tidal 55’s 55-gallon ceiling but still inside the Tidal 75’s 75-gallon ceiling, the 75 is the model that stays within Seachem’s published range. If the aquarium is comfortably inside both ranges, the decision moves to media volume, desired flow, livestock current tolerance and physical fit.
Our aquarium filter size guide explains why manufacturer ranges and model-specific specifications are more useful than treating a generic turnover rule as universal.
Flow and media capacity: the 75 adds 100 GPH and 0.7 L
Seachem publishes 250 US GPH for the Tidal 55 and 350 US GPH for the Tidal 75 under the same Flow Rate label. Because these are same-family figures from the same manufacturer, 250 versus 350 is a cleaner comparison than mixing differently named hydraulic labels across brands.
The Tidal 75 also increases filter volume from 1.2 Liters to 1.9 Liters, a 0.7 L increase. Included Matrix rises from 250 mL to 350 mL. That extra capacity can be useful when the aquarium needs more mechanical or biological-media space, but more volume is not automatically useful if the smaller filter already meets the filtration plan.
Our aquarium filter media guide explains the role of mechanical, biological and optional chemical media without assuming that every basket should be filled the same way.
Shared architecture: do not invent feature differences that are not there
The Tidal 55 and 75 share the same core feature set in current Seachem documentation. Both have a surface skimmer, intake flow regulation, front flow regulation, bottom-to-top water path, telescoping submerged intake, self-priming pump, maintenance alert, leveling dial, heater holder and one large open media basket.
That means this comparison should not claim that the 75 has a fundamentally better filtration concept. It scales the same design upward. Choose it for its additional documented capacity, not for an invented feature that the Tidal 55 lacks.

Physical fit and the Tidal 75 length discrepancy
The Tidal 55 is consistently documented at 8 1/16 x 6 1/8 x 8 3/8 inches, with 3 inches of wall clearance.
For the Tidal 75, Seachem publishes two different unit-length figures in current primary documentation. The Tidal comparison matrix lists 9 3/8 inches, while the dedicated Tidal 75 page lists 10 1/8 inches. Both current pages list the same 7-inch width, 9 1/2-inch height and 3 1/2 inches of wall clearance.
Because the primary documentation conflicts, do not use the disputed length as a precision fit guarantee. Measure the available space and leave at least the consistent wall-clearance requirement; if the exact front-to-back or side-to-side fit is tight, verify against the physical unit/manual before ordering.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Tidal 55 if:
- the aquarium fits inside Seachem’s 55-gallon ceiling;
- 250 GPH Flow Rate and 1.2 L of filter volume meet the filtration plan;
- lower 6W draw matters;
- 3 inches of wall clearance fits more comfortably;
- you want the shared Tidal feature set without sizing up unnecessarily.
Choose the Tidal 75 if:
- the aquarium exceeds the 55-gallon ceiling but remains within the 75-gallon ceiling;
- the filtration plan benefits from 1.9 L rather than 1.2 L of filter volume;
- the extra 100 GPH Flow Rate serves a real circulation requirement;
- the 8W draw and larger body are acceptable;
- 3 1/2 inches of wall clearance is available.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Tidal 75 always better than the Tidal 55?
No. The Tidal 75 has a higher manufacturer aquarium ceiling, more filter volume and higher published Flow Rate, but both use the same core Tidal architecture. If the Tidal 55's 55-gallon ceiling, 1.2 L filter volume and 250 GPH specification already fit the aquarium, the larger unit may add size and power draw without solving a real problem.
How much more media volume does the Tidal 75 have?
Seachem publishes 1.9 Liters of filter volume for the Tidal 75 and 1.2 Liters for the Tidal 55, a difference of 0.7 L. Seachem also ships 350 mL of Matrix with the 75 versus 250 mL with the 55.
Do the Tidal 55 and 75 have the same features?
Their core feature lists are effectively the same in current Seachem documentation: surface skimmer, intake flow regulation, flow regulation, self-priming pump, maintenance alert, telescoping intake, leveling dial, heater holder and open media basket architecture. The meaningful differences are size, aquarium ceiling, flow, filter volume, power and clearance.
Why are two different Tidal 75 lengths shown online?
Seachem publishes two different unit-length figures in its current documentation: 9 3/8 inches on the Tidal comparison matrix and 10 1/8 inches on the dedicated Tidal 75 product page. Because those primary sources conflict, PetGearReport does not silently choose one as definitive. The 7-inch width, 9 1/2-inch height and 3 1/2 inches of wall clearance are consistent across the current pages.
