Buying guide

Start with the exact aquarium envelope and cabinet height, then decide whether the 207's additional media volume and filter circulation solve a real requirement. In the shared 20–30 gallon range, both models use 10W, publish the same 4.75 ft maximum head and occupy the same 7.5 x 7-inch cabinet footprint. The 107 is 13.7 inches high; the 207 is 16.5 inches high and adds media capacity and circulation. Keep Pump Output and Filter Circulation as separate manufacturer specifications rather than mixing them into one performance claim.

How we researched and scored

PetGearReport has not physically tested the Fluval 107 or 207, measured their installed water flow, noise, priming behavior, debris capture or long-term durability. We compared current Fluval specifications, model identity, aquarium range, same-name hydraulic labels, media capacity, dimensions, power draw, head-pressure limits, maintenance architecture, replacement-parts documentation and current public product-identity evidence. Amazon pricing, temporary availability and customer-star ratings were not scoring inputs.

The displayed 1–10 number is a PetGearReport research score, rounded to the nearest whole number from the same five weighted categories for both filters:

Filter Tank fit / hydraulics 25% Media capacity 25% Cabinet fit 20% Energy / headroom 15% Docs / parts 15% Weighted result Published score
Fluval 107 9 7 10 10 10 9.00 9/10
Fluval 207 9 9 8 10 10 9.10 9/10

Both round to 9/10 because they share a well-documented platform and solve adjacent sizing needs. The 107 appears first because the central decision on this page is the 20–30 gallon overlap, where its shorter body can be the cleaner fit when the additional 207 media capacity and circulation are not needed. The 207’s slightly higher weighted result reflects additional capacity, not a universal performance win.

Quick verdict

Choose the Fluval 107 when the aquarium is inside its 10–30 gallon range and the 1.2 L basket volume and 95 GPH Filter Circulation already meet the setup. It occupies the same 7.5 x 7-inch footprint as the 207 but is only 13.7 inches high.

Choose the Fluval 207 when the aquarium is closer to or above the 107’s upper limit or the filtration plan benefits from 1.8 L of basket volume and 121 GPH Filter Circulation. The footprint, 10W draw and 4.75 ft maximum head do not change; height rises to 16.5 inches.

Inside the 20–30 gallon overlap, the 207 is justified only when the extra media volume, documented circulation or larger aquarium envelope solves a real requirement. The 207 does not add maximum-head allowance, lower power draw or a smaller cabinet footprint; it adds capacity and height.

The 20–30 gallon overlap is the real decision zone

The 107 is rated for 10–30 gallons, while the 207 is rated for 20–45 gallons. That creates a 20–30 gallon overlap where either model falls inside Fluval’s current manufacturer envelope.

Inside that overlap, “buy the bigger filter” is not a complete decision rule. The 207 adds 0.6 L of basket volume, 26 GPH of published Filter Circulation, 1.1 L of total chamber volume and 1.4 L of total canister volume. It does not add published maximum-head pressure, wattage or cabinet-floor footprint. Its principal physical cost is height: 16.5 inches versus 13.7 inches.

If those additional media and circulation specifications solve a real filtration requirement, the 207 makes sense. If they do not, the 107 gives you the same 07 Series architecture in a shorter body.

For broader sizing context, use our aquarium filter size guide. It explains why manufacturer range and model-specific hydraulic documentation are more useful than treating one generic turnover ratio as a universal rule.

Pump Output vs Filter Circulation

Fluval publishes two hydraulic numbers for each filter. For the 107, Pump Output is 145 US GPH while Filter Circulation is 95 US GPH. For the 207, Pump Output is 206 US GPH while Filter Circulation is 121 US GPH.

Compare 145 versus 206 when discussing Pump Output. Compare 95 versus 121 when discussing Filter Circulation. Do not compare one model’s pump-output figure with the other model’s filter-circulation figure and infer performance from the larger number.

PetGearReport has not measured installed flow for either model. Real system behavior can vary with media condition, hose routing, head height and maintenance state.

Media capacity and the shared 07 Series architecture

Both models use the same basic 07 Series flow path, with a vertical mechanical pre-filter before water moves through the media trays. The 207 scales that architecture upward rather than changing the basic filtration concept.

The 107 publishes 1.2 L basket volume, 2.0 L total chamber volume and 3.9 L canister volume. The 207 increases those figures to 1.8 L, 3.1 L and 5.3 L respectively. Its vertical pre-filter area also increases from 514 cm² to 803 cm².

More media volume can be useful when you need more mechanical, biological or optional chemical-media capacity, but volume alone does not replace correct media selection or maintenance. Our aquarium filter media guide explains the role of each media type and why the actual flow path matters.

Same footprint, different cabinet height

Both models have a 7.5 x 7-inch footprint. The 107 is 13.7 inches high and the 207 is 16.5 inches high, a 2.8-inch difference. That makes vertical service clearance the key physical distinction rather than cabinet-floor area.

Power draw and published maximum head are ties in Fluval’s current specifications: both are 10W at 120V/60Hz and both publish 4.75 ft / 1.45 m maximum head. The 207 should therefore be justified by its larger aquarium envelope, media capacity or higher documented circulation—not by claims of lower power or greater maximum head.

Check the real cabinet, hose route and service clearance before ordering. Nominal aquarium size alone does not prove that the taller model is necessary or that it will fit comfortably.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Fluval 207 better than the 107?

Not universally. The 207 has a larger manufacturer aquarium range, more media volume and higher published filter circulation. The 107 is 2.8 inches shorter while using the same cabinet-floor footprint, 10W power draw and 4.75 ft maximum-head specification. The better choice depends on aquarium size, vertical clearance and media needs.

Which should I choose for a 20-gallon aquarium?

A 20-gallon aquarium falls inside both current Fluval ranges. The 107 is rated for 10–30 gallons and the 207 for 20–45 gallons. If the 107's media capacity and circulation meet the setup, its shorter body can be the cleaner fit; choose the 207 when the extra media volume or circulation serves a specific need.

Do the 107 and 207 have the same maximum head and wattage?

Yes. Fluval publishes 4.75 ft / 1.45 m maximum head and 10W at 120V/60Hz for both models. Those two specifications therefore do not justify moving from the 107 to the 207 by themselves.

Does the 207 hold more filter media?

Yes. Fluval publishes 1.8 L of basket volume for the 207 versus 1.2 L for the 107. Total chamber volume is 3.1 L versus 2.0 L, and total canister volume is 5.3 L versus 3.9 L. More volume is useful only when the aquarium and maintenance plan benefit from it.
