Fluval 207 vs 307: Flow, Media Capacity & Tank Fit
The Fluval 207 and 307 use the same 07 Series architecture, but the 307 adds media volume, filter circulation and hydraulic headroom while keeping the same 16.5-inch height. The 207 uses less cabinet floor space and less power. This comparison uses current Fluval documentation and current public product-identity evidence. PetGearReport has not physically tested these filters, measured installed flow or noise, or observed long-term durability.

Fluval 307 Performance Canister Filter
Best for: 40–70 gallon setups that benefit from more media volume, higher documented filter circulation or greater head-pressure allowance and have room for the longer footprint
What we like
- Fluval rates it for 40–70 US Gal aquariums
- 303 US GPH Pump Output and 206 US GPH Filter Circulation are published separately
- 3.1 L basket volume and 4.5 L total chamber volume
- 5.75 ft maximum head pressure
- Same 16.5-inch height as the 207 with more media capacity
What we don't
- 9.5-inch body length uses more cabinet floor space than the 207
- 16W 120V draw is higher than the 207's 10W
- Extra capacity is unnecessary if the aquarium is comfortably served by the 207

Fluval identifies the current 307 as item A446 / UPC 015561104463 for 40–70 US Gal / 90–330 L aquariums. It publishes 303 US GPH Pump Output and 206 US GPH Filter Circulation at 120V/60Hz.
The 307 increases basket volume to 3.1 L, total chamber volume to 4.5 L and canister volume to 7.3 L. Maximum head pressure rises to 5.75 ft / 1.75 m, while 120V power draw rises to 16W. Height stays at 16.5 inches, but body length increases from 7.5 to 9.5 inches.
Product identity evidence checked September 25, 2026: B07JH4JHTC matched Fluval 307 / model A446; Fluval identifies A446 / UPC 015561104463 in current manufacturer documentation. This verifies product identity without freezing current Amazon price or availability. The 307 is the stronger fit when the aquarium or plumbing layout benefits from that additional documented capacity; it is not automatically the better purchase for every tank in the shared range.
Choose the 307 when the larger 40–70 gallon envelope, 3.1 L basket volume, 206 GPH filter-circulation specification or 5.75 ft head limit solves a real sizing or installation need.
Check price on Amazon →How we researched and scored
PetGearReport has not physically tested the Fluval 207 or 307, measured their installed water flow, noise, priming behavior, debris capture or long-term durability. We compared current Fluval specifications, model identity, aquarium range, same-name hydraulic labels, media capacity, dimensions, power draw, head-pressure limits, maintenance architecture, replacement-parts documentation and current public product-identity evidence. Amazon pricing, temporary availability and customer-star ratings were not scoring inputs.
The displayed 1–10 number is a PetGearReport research score, rounded to the nearest whole number from the same five weighted categories for both filters:
- Tank fit & hydraulic documentation — 25%: exact aquarium range and clarity of Pump Output and Filter Circulation specifications.
- Media capacity & architecture — 25%: basket, chamber and canister volume plus the shared 07 Series pre-filter/media-tray design.
- Cabinet fit & installation — 20%: footprint, canister height and practical service access.
- Energy & hydraulic headroom — 15%: 120V wattage and maximum head-pressure allowance considered together rather than treating either as an automatic advantage.
- Documentation & parts support — 15%: current official model pages, item/UPC traceability, manuals and replacement-part support.
| Filter | Tank fit / hydraulics 25% | Media capacity 25% | Cabinet fit 20% | Energy / headroom 15% | Docs / parts 15% | Weighted result | Published score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fluval 207 | 9 | 8 | 10 | 9 | 10 | 9.10 | 9/10 |
| Fluval 307 | 9 | 10 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 9.20 | 9/10 |
Both round to 9/10 because they share a well-documented platform and solve adjacent sizing needs. The 207 appears first because the central decision on this page is the 40–45 gallon overlap, where its smaller footprint and lower power draw can make it the cleaner fit when the extra 307 capacity is not needed. The 307’s slightly higher weighted result reflects additional media and hydraulic headroom, not a universal performance win.
Quick verdict
Choose the Fluval 207 when the aquarium is inside its 20–45 gallon range and the 1.8 L basket volume, 121 GPH Filter Circulation and 4.75 ft head limit already meet the setup. Its 7.5 x 7-inch footprint and 10W draw make it easier to justify in the shared range.
Choose the Fluval 307 when the aquarium is closer to or above the 207’s upper limit, you want 3.1 L of basket volume, or the plumbing layout benefits from the 206 GPH Filter Circulation and 5.75 ft maximum-head specification. The height remains 16.5 inches, but the cabinet needs room for the longer 9.5-inch body plus service clearance.
Fluval 207 vs 307 at a glance
| Decision point | Fluval 207 | Fluval 307 |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer aquarium range | 20–45 US Gal / 60–220 L | 40–70 US Gal / 90–330 L |
| Pump Output (120V/60Hz) | 206 US GPH / 780 LPH | 303 US GPH / 1150 LPH |
| Filter Circulation (120V/60Hz) | 121 US GPH / 460 LPH | 206 US GPH / 780 LPH |
| Vertical pre-filter | 803 cm² | 803 cm² |
| Basket volume | 1.8 L | 3.1 L |
| Total chamber volume | 3.1 L | 4.5 L |
| Canister volume | 5.3 L | 7.3 L |
| Max. head pressure | 4.75 ft / 1.45 m | 5.75 ft / 1.75 m |
| 120V wattage | 10W | 16W |
| Dimensions | 7.5 x 7 x 16.5 in | 9.5 x 7 x 16.5 in |
The two filters are directly comparable on Pump Output and directly comparable on Filter Circulation, because Fluval uses the same labels for both models. But pump output and filter circulation are different specifications and should not be mixed into one ranking number.
What you gain by moving from 207 to 307
The 207 and 307 share the same 07 Series architecture, so the upgrade decision is best expressed as the exact manufacturer-spec difference rather than as a vague “bigger is better” claim.
| Moving from 207 to 307 | Published difference |
|---|---|
| Aquarium-range ceiling | +25 US gal / +110 L |
| Pump Output (120V/60Hz) | +97 GPH |
| Filter Circulation (120V/60Hz) | +85 GPH |
| Basket volume | +1.3 L |
| Total chamber volume | +1.4 L |
| Canister volume | +2.0 L |
| Maximum head pressure | +1.0 ft / +0.30 m |
| Body length | +2.0 in |
| 120V wattage | +6W |
| Body height | No published change: both 16.5 in |
In the shared 40–45 gallon range, the 307 upgrade is justified only when the additional media volume, complete-filter circulation, head-pressure allowance or broader tank envelope solves a real requirement. The 207 remains inside Fluval’s published range there and uses less cabinet floor space and power.
The same 16.5-inch height does not mean the two filters need the same cabinet floor space: Fluval publishes a 7.5 × 7-inch body for the 207 and a 9.5 × 7-inch body for the 307, before allowing for hoses and service access.
These are manufacturer specifications, not PetGearReport flow, noise or durability measurements. Keep Pump Output with Pump Output and Filter Circulation with Filter Circulation.
The 40–45 gallon overlap is the real decision zone
The 207 is rated for 20–45 gallons, while the 307 is rated for 40–70 gallons. That creates a 40–45 gallon overlap where either model falls inside Fluval’s current manufacturer envelope.
Inside that overlap, “buy the bigger filter” is not a complete decision rule. The 307 adds 1.3 L of basket volume, 85 GPH of published Filter Circulation and 1 ft of maximum-head allowance. It also uses a body that is 2 inches longer and raises 120V draw from 10W to 16W.
If those additional specifications solve a real media, plumbing or capacity requirement, the 307 makes sense. If they do not, the 207 gives you the same 07 Series service architecture at the same 16.5-inch height with less cabinet floor-space demand.
For broader sizing context, use our aquarium filter size guide. It explains why a manufacturer range and model-specific hydraulic documentation are more useful than treating one generic turnover ratio as a universal rule.
Pump Output vs Filter Circulation
Fluval publishes two hydraulic numbers for each filter. For the 207, Pump Output is 206 US GPH while Filter Circulation is 121 US GPH. For the 307, Pump Output is 303 US GPH while Filter Circulation is 206 US GPH.
This comparison contains a useful trap: the number 206 GPH appears twice, but under different labels. It is the 207’s Pump Output and the 307’s Filter Circulation. Do not compare those two figures as if they describe the same operating condition. Compare 206 versus 303 when discussing Pump Output, and 121 versus 206 when discussing Filter Circulation.
PetGearReport has not measured installed flow for either model. Real system behavior can vary with media condition, hose routing, head height and maintenance state.
Media capacity and the shared 07 Series architecture
Both models publish the same 803 cm² vertical pre-filter area and use the same basic 07 Series flow path: water passes through the pre-filter before rising through the media trays. The material difference here is media capacity, not a completely different filtration architecture.
The 207 publishes 1.8 L basket volume, 3.1 L total chamber volume and 5.3 L canister volume. The 307 increases those figures to 3.1 L, 4.5 L and 7.3 L respectively.
More media volume can be useful when you need more mechanical, biological or optional chemical-media capacity, but volume alone does not replace correct media selection or maintenance. Our aquarium filter media guide explains the role of each media type and why the actual flow path matters.
Same height, different cabinet footprint
The 207 and 307 are both 16.5 inches high and 7 inches wide. The difference is body length: 7.5 inches for the 207 versus 9.5 inches for the 307. That same 16.5-inch height means neither model buys extra vertical clearance over the other, but the 207 needs less cabinet floor space.
Power draw is another trade-off rather than a quality score. Fluval lists 10W at 120V/60Hz for the 207 and 16W for the 307. The 307 also raises maximum head pressure from 4.75 ft to 5.75 ft.
Check the real cabinet, hose route and service clearance before ordering. Nominal aquarium size alone does not prove that the larger footprint or higher head-pressure specification is necessary.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Fluval 207 if:
- the aquarium is inside the 20–45 gallon manufacturer range;
- you are specifically in the 40–45 gallon overlap and do not need the 307’s extra capacity;
- a 7.5 x 7-inch footprint is easier to fit in your cabinet;
- 1.8 L of basket volume fits your media plan;
- the lower 10W draw is preferable when the larger model offers no practical benefit.
Choose the Fluval 307 if:
- the aquarium is above 45 gallons or you want the 40–70 gallon manufacturer envelope;
- 3.1 L of basket volume is useful for the planned media load;
- the setup benefits from 206 GPH published Filter Circulation or the 5.75 ft head limit;
- the cabinet safely accommodates the 9.5 x 7-inch footprint plus service clearance;
- the additional 16W draw is justified by a real capacity or plumbing need.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Fluval 307 better than the 207?
Not universally. The 307 has a larger manufacturer aquarium range, more basket volume, higher published filter circulation and a higher maximum-head specification. The 207 uses less cabinet floor space and less power while covering 20–45 gallons. The better choice depends on aquarium size, cabinet dimensions, media needs and plumbing layout.
Which should I choose for a 40-gallon aquarium?
A 40-gallon aquarium falls inside both current Fluval ranges. The 207 is rated for 20–45 gallons and the 307 for 40–70 gallons. If the 207's media capacity, circulation and head limit meet the setup, its smaller footprint can be the cleaner fit; choose the 307 when the extra capacity or headroom serves a specific need.
Can I compare 206 GPH and 206 GPH directly?
Only after checking the label. Fluval lists 206 GPH as the 207's Pump Output and also 206 GPH as the 307's Filter Circulation. Pump output and filter circulation are different specifications. For a like-for-like comparison, compare 207 versus 307 Pump Output, or 207 versus 307 Filter Circulation.
Does the 307 hold more filter media?
Yes. Fluval publishes 3.1 L of basket volume for the 307 versus 1.8 L for the 207. Total chamber volume is 4.5 L versus 3.1 L, and total canister volume is 7.3 L versus 5.3 L. More volume is useful only when the aquarium and maintenance plan benefit from it.
