Buying guide

Start with the aquarium-capacity ceiling, cabinet height and plumbing requirements. FX6 adds canister volume, biological volume, mechanical area, Pump Output, Filter Circulation and maximum head while keeping the same 15.75 x 15.75-inch footprint as FX4. Keep Pump Output and Filter Circulation as separate same-name manufacturer specifications; pump output and filter circulation are different specifications and neither number should be treated as a universal performance verdict.

How we researched and scored

PetGearReport has not physically tested the Fluval FX4 or FX6, measured their installed water flow, noise, priming behavior, debris capture or long-term durability. We compared current Fluval specifications, model identity, aquarium-capacity guidance, same-name hydraulic labels, canister and biological volume, mechanical area, dimensions, power draw, head-pressure limits, shared FX architecture, replacement-parts documentation and current public product-identity evidence. Amazon pricing, temporary availability and customer-star ratings were not scoring inputs.

The displayed 1–10 number is a PetGearReport research score, rounded to the nearest whole number from the same five weighted categories for both filters:

Filter Tank fit / hydraulics 25% Capacity / media 25% Cabinet fit 20% Energy / headroom 15% Docs / parts 15% Weighted result Published score
Fluval FX4 9 9 10 9 10 9.35 9/10
Fluval FX6 10 10 7 9 10 9.25 9/10

Both round to 9/10. FX4 appears first because this head-to-head is most useful for buyers whose system already fits inside its up-to-250-gallon manufacturer ceiling: in that decision zone, the shorter 16.5-inch body and lower 30W draw can outweigh unused FX6 capacity. FX6 earns its place when the larger capacity, media volume or hydraulic headroom is genuinely required. These scores are editorial research judgments, not laboratory performance measurements.

Quick verdict

Choose the Fluval FX4 when the aquarium is comfortably inside its up-to-250-gallon manufacturer capacity, 14 L canister volume and 450 GPH Filter Circulation fit the filtration plan, and a 16.5-inch body is easier to service in the cabinet.

Choose the Fluval FX6 when the system needs the up-to-400-gallon envelope, 20 L canister volume, 5.9 L biological volume, 563 GPH Filter Circulation or 10.8 ft maximum-head specification. Confirm that the cabinet has room for a 20.8-inch-tall canister plus service clearance.

What you gain by moving from FX4 to FX6

Fluval’s current U.S. specification tables make this upgrade unusually easy to audit because the company uses the same labels for both models. The table below shows the absolute manufacturer-spec difference rather than turning those figures into a universal performance score.

Moving from FX4 to FX6 Published difference
Aquarium-capacity ceiling +150 US gal / +500 L
Pump Output (120V/60Hz) +225 GPH
Filter Circulation (120V/60Hz) +113 GPH
Canister volume +6 L
Biological volume +2.0 L
Mechanical area +108.5 in²
Maximum head pressure +3.9 ft / +1.2 m
Body height +4.3 in height
120V wattage +13W
Cabinet floor footprint No published change: both 15.75 × 15.75 in

The FX6 upgrade is justified only when one or more of those added limits solve a real requirement: a tank above the FX4’s published capacity ceiling, a media plan that can use the additional volume, a plumbing route that needs the higher head limit, or another installation constraint supported by the documented specs.

The trade-off is not extra floor area; it is vertical clearance and electrical draw. The shared 15.75 × 15.75-inch footprint does not mean the two filters have the same cabinet requirement because the FX6 body is 4.3 inches taller before allowing for hose, valve and service clearance.

These are current Fluval manufacturer specifications, not PetGearReport bench measurements. Pump Output and Filter Circulation remain separate labels and should be compared only like-for-like.

For the previous size step in this platform, our Fluval FX2 vs FX4 comparison shows how the same FX architecture scales from the smaller footprint.

Pump Output vs Filter Circulation

Fluval publishes 700 US GPH Pump Output and 450 US GPH Filter Circulation for FX4. For FX6, the corresponding figures are 925 US GPH and 563 US GPH.

This is a clean same-brand comparison because the manufacturer uses the same two labels for both models. Compare 700 versus 925 when discussing Pump Output, and 450 versus 563 when discussing Filter Circulation. The larger pump-output number is not a substitute for the complete-filter circulation figure.

PetGearReport has not measured installed flow for either filter. Media condition, hose routing, vertical lift and maintenance state can affect real system behavior. Our aquarium filter size guide explains why manufacturer capacity and model-specific hydraulic documentation are more useful than applying one universal turnover rule.

Media capacity: total volume and biological volume both change

FX4 publishes 14 L canister volume, 217 in² mechanical area and 3.9 L biological volume. FX6 increases those figures to 20 L, 325.5 in² and 5.9 L respectively.

That distinction matters because “more media” is not one single specification. Mechanical area describes debris-capture surface, while biological volume is a separate manufacturer metric. FX6 increases both; FX4 still provides the same FX basket-in-basket architecture in a smaller overall package.

More volume is useful when it supports a defined filtration job. It does not justify filling every basket with media that the aquarium does not need. Our aquarium filter media guide explains mechanical, biological and optional chemical media by function.

Cabinet fit: same floor area, different height

The footprint is the unusually simple part of this comparison: both are 15.75 x 15.75 inches. The important cabinet difference is vertical clearance. FX4 is 16.5 inches high; FX6 is 20.8 inches high.

Do not compare those body heights with the cabinet opening alone. Service access also needs room above the canister for hoses, valves and removal. A cabinet that fits the FX4 comfortably may still make the taller FX6 awkward to disconnect or lift out.

The FX6 also raises the 120V specification from 30W to 43W and maximum head from 6.9 ft to 10.8 ft. The higher head limit can matter for a more demanding vertical return path; it is not automatically an advantage in a setup where FX4 already meets the installation requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Fluval FX6 automatically better than the FX4?

No. FX6 has a larger manufacturer capacity ceiling, more canister and biological volume, higher filter circulation and a higher maximum-head specification. FX4 is shorter and uses less power while retaining the same cabinet-floor footprint. The better fit depends on aquarium size, cabinet height, media needs and plumbing layout.

Do the FX4 and FX6 take the same cabinet floor space?

Fluval publishes the same 15.75 x 15.75-inch footprint for both. Height is different: FX4 is 16.5 inches high and FX6 is 20.8 inches high, so vertical service clearance is a major cabinet-fit distinction.

Can I compare 925 GPH and 450 GPH directly?

No. Fluval labels 925 GPH as FX6 Pump Output and 450 GPH as FX4 Filter Circulation. Pump output and filter circulation are different specifications. Compare 700 versus 925 for Pump Output, or 450 versus 563 for Filter Circulation.

Does the FX6 hold more biological media?

Fluval publishes 5.9 L biological volume for FX6 versus 3.9 L for FX4. It also publishes 20 L versus 14 L total canister volume and 325.5 in² versus 217 in² mechanical area. More volume is useful only when the aquarium and maintenance plan benefit from it.
