Fluval FX4 vs OASE BioMaster 2 600: Flow, Maintenance & Cabinet Fit
The Fluval FX4 and OASE BioMaster 2 600 target large canister-filter setups with very different cabinet geometry and service architecture. Fluval publishes a 250 US Gal ceiling and separate Pump Output and Filter Circulation figures for FX4; OASE publishes a 160-gallon / 600-L ceiling and 345 gal/h under its Max. gallons per hour label for BioMaster 2 600. This comparison uses current manufacturer documentation and exact product-identity evidence checked September 24, 2026. PetGearReport has not physically tested these filters, measured installed flow or noise, or observed long-term durability.

Product identity evidence checked September 24, 2026: B0F3LN8S3G matched OASE BioMaster 2 600; the current OASE US model is SKU 94702, without freezing current Amazon price or availability.
Choose BioMaster 2 600 when its current capacity guidance is sufficient and the 9.4-inch-square footprint, EasyClean service architecture or lower 23W draw better fits the installation.
Check price on Amazon →How we researched and scored
PetGearReport has not physically tested the Fluval FX4 or OASE BioMaster 2 600, measured installed water flow, noise, priming behavior, debris capture or long-term durability. We compared current manufacturer specifications, exact model identity, aquarium-capacity guidance, manufacturer-specific hydraulic labels, media architecture and published volumes, dimensions, power draw, maximum-head specifications, service design, parts/support documentation and current public product-identity evidence. Amazon pricing, temporary availability and customer-star ratings were not scoring inputs.
The displayed 1–10 number is a PetGearReport research score, rounded to the nearest whole number from the same five weighted categories for both filters:
- Tank fit & hydraulic documentation — 25%: exact manufacturer aquarium guidance and clarity of the hydraulic labels each brand actually publishes.
- Maintenance & service architecture — 25%: routine debris access, pre-filter/service design and manufacturer-documented maintenance workflow.
- Cabinet fit & installation — 20%: footprint, canister height, hose routing and service clearance.
- Energy & hydraulic headroom — 15%: 120V wattage and published maximum-head allowance without treating either as a universal quality score.
- Documentation & parts support — 15%: current official model pages, SKU/item traceability, manuals and replacement-part/support paths.
| Filter | Tank fit / hydraulics 25% | Maintenance 25% | Cabinet fit 20% | Energy / headroom 15% | Docs / parts 15% | Weighted result | Published score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fluval FX4 | 10 | 9 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 9.20 | 9/10 |
| OASE BioMaster 2 600 | 9 | 10 | 10 | 9 | 9 | 9.45 | 9/10 |
Both round to 9/10 because they solve different installation problems. FX4 appears first because its larger documented aquarium envelope is the more important default discriminator in this head-to-head. BioMaster 2 600 becomes the stronger fit when its 160-gallon guidance is sufficient and the compact footprint or EasyClean service architecture has greater practical value.
Quick verdict
Choose the Fluval FX4 when the aquarium or filtration plan genuinely benefits from its up-to-250 US Gal / 1000 L manufacturer envelope, 450 US GPH Filter Circulation or shorter 16.5-inch body and the cabinet can accept a 15.75 x 15.75-inch footprint.
Choose the OASE BioMaster 2 600 when its current 160 gal / 600 L manufacturer guidance is sufficient and the 9.4 x 9.4-inch footprint, EasyClean pre-filter workflow or lower 23W draw matters more than FX4’s additional capacity envelope.
Fluval FX4 vs OASE BioMaster 2 600 at a glance
| Decision point | Fluval FX4 | OASE BioMaster 2 600 |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer aquarium guidance | Up to 250 US Gal / 1000 L | Up to 160 gal / 600 L |
| Published hydraulic labels | 700 US GPH Pump Output; 450 US GPH Filter Circulation | 345 gal/h Max. gallons per hour; 1320 L/h Max. flow rate |
| Max. head | 6.9 ft / 2.1 m | 5.9 ft / 1.80 m |
| 120V power | 30W | 23W |
| Dimensions | 15.75 x 15.75 x 16.5 in | 9.4 x 9.4 x 19 in |
| Published media metrics | 14 L canister; 3.9 L biological; 217 in² mechanical area | 6.8 L filter volume; 0.60 L pre-filter volume |
| Routine service architecture | FX media baskets, foam/mechanical area and utility/drain workflow | Separately removable EasyClean pre-filter plus main filter body |
| Heater integration | No integrated-heater feature used in this comparison | Heater adapter and heater plug included; compatible HeatUp integration is separate |
The hydraulic labels are not interchangeable. OASE’s 345 gal/h Max. gallons per hour is not the same named specification as Fluval’s 450 US GPH Filter Circulation or 700 US GPH Pump Output. This page does not turn those three numbers into a standardized cross-brand performance ranking.
What changes between FX4 and BioMaster 2 600
| Installation decision | Fluval FX4 | OASE BioMaster 2 600 | Practical delta |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer ceiling | 250 US Gal | 160 US gal | FX4 extends the published ceiling by 90 US gallons |
| Body height | 16.5 in | 19 in | FX4 is 2.5 in shorter |
| Cabinet footprint | 15.75 × 15.75 in | 9.4 × 9.4 in | BioMaster is 6.35 in narrower and 6.35 in shallower |
| Maximum head | 6.9 ft | 5.9 ft | FX4 adds 1.0 ft of published maximum head |
| 120V power | 30W | 23W | BioMaster uses 7W less published 120V power |
| Published water-flow label | 450 GPH Filter Circulation; 700 GPH Pump Output | 345 GPH Max. gallons per hour | 450 GPH Filter Circulation and 345 GPH Max. gallons per hour are not the same metric |
This is why the choice is mostly about documented capacity, cabinet geometry and service architecture rather than a single cross-brand GPH number. OASE’s current 160-gallon ceiling narrows the capacity gap slightly versus older documentation, but FX4 still has the larger manufacturer envelope.
Capacity: FX4 has the larger manufacturer envelope
Fluval publishes FX4 for aquariums up to 250 US Gal / 1000 L. OASE’s current US page lists BioMaster 2 600 up to 160 gal / 600 L.
That difference matters when aquarium volume is outside OASE’s documented envelope. It does not mean a 250-gallon label automatically makes FX4 the better filter for every smaller system. If both products cover the aquarium, cabinet fit, service workflow, head requirement, media plan and livestock context become more useful decision criteria.
Cabinet fit: BioMaster uses far less floor space, FX4 is shorter
FX4 measures 15.75 x 15.75 x 16.5 inches. BioMaster 2 600 measures 9.4 x 9.4 x 19 inches.
BioMaster therefore needs dramatically less cabinet floor area, but it is 2.5 inches taller. FX4 is lower, but the square 15.75-inch footprint can be the harder physical constraint in a narrow stand.
Measure usable floor width, depth, cabinet opening, hose path and vertical service clearance. Nominal aquarium gallons do not tell you whether the canister can actually be installed and serviced.
Flow labels: do not compare 450 GPH with 345 GPH as if they mean the same thing
Fluval publishes 700 US GPH Pump Output and 450 US GPH Filter Circulation for FX4. OASE publishes 345 gal/h Max. gallons per hour and 1320 L/h Max. flow rate for BioMaster 2 600.
Those labels are manufacturer-specific. They are useful inside each brand’s documentation, but they are not a common PetGearReport bench test. We therefore do not say that 450 is “30% more real flow” than 345, or make any other conversion from unlike labels into a measured installed-performance claim.
Our aquarium filter size guide explains why manufacturer tank guidance, head limits, media condition, plumbing and livestock needs should not be reduced to one universal turnover number.
Maximum head and power draw
Fluval publishes 6.9 ft / 2.1 m maximum head pressure for FX4. OASE publishes 5.9 ft / 1.80 m maximum head height for BioMaster 2 600.
FX4 therefore has the larger published head allowance. OASE, however, lists lower filter power consumption at 23W versus 30W for FX4. Neither number is a standalone quality verdict; both belong in the installation trade-off.
Media metrics: the liter numbers are not one-to-one
Fluval publishes 14 L canister volume, 3.9 L biological volume and 217 in² / 1400 cm² mechanical area for FX4. OASE publishes 6.8 L filter volume and a separate 0.60 L pre-filter volume for BioMaster 2 600.
These are not equivalent media metrics. A Fluval canister-volume figure cannot be directly ranked against OASE filter volume as if the manufacturers define usable media space identically, and OASE’s separate pre-filter chamber has its own service role.
Our aquarium filter media guide explains mechanical, biological and optional chemical media by function rather than treating the biggest liter number as an automatic winner.
Maintenance: EasyClean is the clearest OASE differentiator
OASE documents the EasyClean pre-filter as a module that can be removed separately from the rest of the filter. The current BioMaster 2 600 package also includes the main media, aquastop/service hardware, a heater adapter and heater plug.
FX4 uses the FX internal flow path and media-basket architecture instead. Fluval also provides its utility/drain workflow for service. These are documented design differences; PetGearReport has not timed maintenance, measured debris loading or observed long-term seal behavior on either model.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the Fluval FX4 if:
- you need the larger up-to-250-gallon manufacturer envelope;
- 450 GPH Filter Circulation is useful inside Fluval’s documented specification framework;
- the shorter 16.5-inch canister fits the stand better;
- the cabinet can accommodate the 15.75 x 15.75-inch footprint;
- the FX canister/media architecture matches the intended filtration plan.
Choose the OASE BioMaster 2 600 if:
- the aquarium is within OASE’s current 160-gallon / 600-L guidance;
- the 9.4 x 9.4-inch cabinet footprint solves a real space constraint;
- separately removable EasyClean pre-filter service matters to your maintenance workflow;
- the lower 23W published power draw is useful when FX4’s larger capacity is unnecessary;
- a 19-inch body plus service clearance fits the cabinet.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Fluval FX4 automatically more powerful because it lists 450 GPH Filter Circulation?
No cross-brand conclusion is justified from that number alone. Fluval labels 450 US GPH as Filter Circulation and 700 US GPH as Pump Output. OASE labels 345 gal/h as Max. gallons per hour. These labels come from different manufacturer test frameworks and are not interchangeable standardized installed-flow measurements.
Which filter needs less cabinet floor space?
The OASE BioMaster 2 600. OASE publishes a 9.4 x 9.4-inch footprint, while Fluval publishes 15.75 x 15.75 inches for FX4. The trade-off is height: OASE is 19 inches tall versus 16.5 inches for FX4.
Does BioMaster 2 600 include a heater?
The standard BioMaster 2 600 compared here is not the Thermo bundle. OASE includes a heater adapter and heater plug and documents HeatUp integration, but heater selection is a separate compatibility and sizing decision.
What current capacity should I use for BioMaster 2 600?
Use OASE's current US manufacturer guidance: up to 160 gallons / 600 L. Treat that published ceiling as a model-selection boundary, not a stocking guarantee or a substitute for flow, media, head-height and maintenance requirements.
