Buying guide

Start with filtration requirements, then cabinet geometry, then the heater decision. FX6 has the much larger documented filtration envelope, more published canister/media volume and higher head specification. Thermo 600 uses far less cabinet floor area, adds EasyClean pre-filter service and bundles HeatUp 300. Keep Fluval Pump Output and Filter Circulation separate from OASE Max. flow rate, and keep filter sizing and heater sizing as separate decisions.

How we researched and scored

PetGearReport has not physically tested the Fluval FX6, OASE BioMaster 2 Thermo 600 or HeatUp 300, measured installed water flow, timed aquarium heating, measured sound, tested thermostat accuracy or observed long-term durability. We compared current Fluval and OASE product documentation, exact model identity, manufacturer aquarium guidance, hydraulic labels, media architecture and published volumes, cabinet dimensions, power draw, head specifications, EasyClean service design, heater inclusion, HeatUp 300 guidance, current public product-identity evidence and relevant installation trade-offs. Amazon pricing, temporary availability, customer-star ratings and popularity were not scoring inputs.

The displayed 1–10 number is a PetGearReport research score, rounded from the same five weighted categories for both options:

Option Filter fit / hydraulics 25% Heating 20% Maintenance / media 20% Cabinet fit 20% Energy / headroom / docs 15% Weighted result Published score
Fluval FX6 10 9 10 7 10 9.20 9/10
OASE BioMaster 2 Thermo 600 8 9 10 10 8 8.90 9/10

Both round to 9/10 because they solve different installation problems. FX6 appears first because the larger documented filtration envelope and head specification are the stronger defaults in this particular cross-brand comparison. Thermo 600 becomes the cleaner choice when 600 L filtration is sufficient and the compact footprint, EasyClean service and integrated-heater architecture have more practical value.

Quick verdict

Choose the Fluval FX6 when the aquarium or filtration plan genuinely benefits from its 400 US Gal / 1500 L manufacturer ceiling, 563 US GPH Filter Circulation, 20 L canister volume or 10.8 ft / 3.3 m maximum-head specification.

Choose the OASE BioMaster 2 Thermo 600 when its 600 L filter envelope is sufficient and the 240 x 240 mm footprint, EasyClean pre-filter and integrated HeatUp 300 package fit the installation better. Confirm the heater requirement independently.

The hydraulic labels are not interchangeable. Fluval’s Pump Output and Filter Circulation are manufacturer-specific labels, while OASE publishes Max. flow rate. Do not convert the numbers into one universal cross-brand ranking as though they were measured under identical definitions and test conditions.

Filtration envelope: FX6 is in the larger documented class

Fluval publishes FX6 for aquariums up to 400 US Gal / 1500 L. OASE publishes BioMaster 2 Thermo 600 for aquariums up to 600 L.

That gap matters when the aquarium genuinely needs the larger manufacturer’s filtration envelope. It does not mean FX6 is automatically the better purchase for every smaller system. If 600 L filtration already covers the aquarium and the installation values compact cabinet fit or EasyClean service, the OASE platform can still be the more coherent choice.

For broader sizing context, use our aquarium filter size guide rather than treating one gallon ceiling as a universal performance guarantee.

Flow labels: keep cross-brand numbers in their own definitions

Fluval publishes 925 US GPH Pump Output and, separately, 563 US GPH Filter Circulation for FX6. OASE publishes 1320 L/h Max. flow rate for Thermo 600.

These are not equivalent labels. Pump Output, Filter Circulation and Max. flow rate should stay attached to their manufacturer’s terminology. PetGearReport has not measured installed flow for either filter, so this comparison does not create a new standardized GPH score from unlike specifications.

Cabinet fit: OASE uses dramatically less floor area

FX6 measures 15.75 x 15.75 x 20.8 inches. OASE publishes 240 x 240 x 480 mm for BioMaster 2 Thermo 600, approximately 9.4 x 9.4 x 18.9 inches.

That makes the OASE body much narrower and shallower and also slightly shorter. Cabinet opening, hose routing and service clearance still need to be measured around the real installation rather than only comparing body dimensions.

Media and service architecture are different

Fluval publishes 20 L canister volume, 5.9 L biological volume and 325.5 in² / 2100 cm² mechanical area for FX6. OASE publishes 6.8 L filter volume and a separate 0.60 L pre-filter volume for Thermo 600.

Those are not equivalent media metrics. A canister-volume label, biological-volume label, mechanical-area figure and filter-volume label describe different parts of different architectures. They should not be collapsed into one headline “media capacity” number.

OASE’s distinctive service feature is the EasyClean pre-filter module, which can be removed separately from the main filter. Fluval’s FX platform instead uses its own multi-stage basket-in-basket architecture. Our aquarium filter media guide explains why media function and flow path matter more than one raw liter figure.

Heating: the Thermo bundle adds convenience, not universal suitability

OASE includes HeatUp 300, SKU 33805, with BioMaster 2 Thermo 600. The current US HeatUp 300 page describes it as a 300W heater best suited for aquariums up to 80 gallons.

The key boundary is that filter sizing and heater sizing are separate decisions. A 600 L filter envelope does not make a 300W heater automatically suitable for every aquarium the filter can serve. Heater sizing also depends on actual water volume, target temperature, ambient conditions and required temperature rise.

Use our aquarium heater size guide for that decision. The integrated-heater architecture is valuable only when the included heater is also appropriate for the real heating requirement.

Power and hydraulic headroom

Fluval publishes 43W for FX6 at 120V/60Hz and 10.8 ft / 3.3 m maximum head pressure. OASE publishes 23W filter power consumption and 1.80 m maximum water column for Thermo 600; it separately lists 22 + 300 W for filter + heater.

Do not compare 43W with 323W and call one filter more efficient. The OASE bundle includes a heater, so the filter load and heating load are different energy functions. Compare filter draw with filter draw, then evaluate heater energy separately from the filtration decision.

If FX6 is already your likely Fluval choice, compare it with the smaller Fluval FX4 vs FX6. For the smaller OASE cross-brand step, see Fluval FX4 vs OASE BioMaster 2 600. If the Thermo concept itself is the unresolved decision, our BioMaster 2 350 vs Thermo 350 comparison explains why filter sizing and heater sizing must remain separate.

Exact product identity verification

Product identity evidence checked September 25, 2026: B00BJQ50HC matched Fluval FX6 / item A219 / UPC 015561102193, while B0F3LKJVGF matched OASE BioMaster 2 Thermo 600 / UPC 706759946810. OASE identifies the current BioMaster 2 Thermo 600 as SKU 94681, without freezing current Amazon price or availability.

The OASE Thermo 600 evidence is intentionally stated in two steps: public catalog evidence maps the ASIN to BioMaster 2 Thermo 600 and UPC 706759946810, while OASE separately supplies current SKU 94681. This avoids inventing a direct ASIN-to-SKU cross-key the catalog evidence does not explicitly publish. No direct Amazon product-page probe was used for this refresh.
