How to Keep Your Aquarium Water Clear and Healthy
Cloudy, smelly tank water is almost always a filtration and maintenance problem, not bad luck. Get the filter right, test the water, and change some of it every week, and the tank stays clear.

Clear water is about biology, not just filtering the murk
New fishkeepers tend to think of a filter as something that strains dirt out of the water, and cloudy water as dirt that needs straining harder. That is only a small part of it. The water in a healthy tank is kept safe by a colony of bacteria living in the filter, and those bacteria are doing the real work: turning the ammonia from fish waste and uneaten food, which is toxic, into nitrite, which is also toxic, and then into far less harmful nitrate that you remove with water changes.
Get that biological cycle established and stable and the tank largely looks after itself. Skip it, or knock it out, and no amount of mechanical filtering saves you. A cloudy bloom in a new tank is usually a bacterial swarm racing to catch up with a waste load the colony cannot yet handle, which is why patience during the first weeks matters more than any gadget. Once the tank is cycled, keeping the water clear comes down to three things working together: a filter big enough to house the bacteria and move the water, a testing habit that tells you what is actually going on, and a regular water change that exports the nitrate and waste the biology cannot. Miss any one and the other two struggle.
Right-size the filter and leave the bacteria alone
The filter is the engine of the tank, and the commonest mistake is running one that is too small. A filter has to turn the tank over enough times an hour to keep waste moving to the bacteria and oxygen circulating, and it has to hold enough media for a big enough bacterial colony. Buy a filter rated for a larger tank than you actually have, because published ratings are optimistic and a filter with headroom copes with a heavy feeding or an extra fish without tipping into cloudy water.

The care of the filter is where clear tanks are won and lost. Never rinse filter media under the tap: chlorinated tap water kills the bacteria you have spent weeks growing, and a filter stripped of its colony leaves you with an uncycled tank and a bloom of cloudy water within days. When the media needs cleaning, swish it gently in a bucket of the tank water you have just siphoned out, which rinses off the gunk while keeping the bacteria alive. Replace media a little at a time rather than all at once, so the colony is never wiped out in one go.
Test the water instead of guessing
You cannot see ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate, and by the time water looks or smells wrong the fish have often already been under stress for a while. A test kit is the only way to know what is actually happening in the tank, and it turns fishkeeping from guesswork into something you can manage. In a new or troubled tank it tells you whether the cycle is holding; in an established one it warns you of a problem before the fish show it.
Use a liquid test kit rather than dip strips for anything that matters. Strips are quick but drift out of accuracy and read vaguely, while a liquid kit gives you numbers you can trust. What you are aiming for is simple to remember. Ammonia and nitrite should both read zero in a cycled tank, because a working bacterial colony converts them as fast as the fish produce them; any reading above zero means the biology is not keeping up and the fish are being harmed. Nitrate, the harmless end product, climbs steadily and is the thing your weekly water change exists to remove. Test weekly in a settled tank, and every day or two whenever something changes, such as new fish, a dead one, or water that suddenly clouds.
The weekly water change does the heavy lifting
No filter removes nitrate, and nothing you add to the tank makes it disappear, so it builds up between water changes until you physically take some water out and put clean water in. The partial water change is the single most important maintenance habit in the hobby, and skipping it is behind more sick fish and algae outbreaks than any equipment fault. Changing roughly a quarter to a third of the water each week keeps nitrate down, replaces trace minerals, and dilutes anything else that has crept up.
Pair the water change with a gravel clean and you do two jobs at once. Never put raw tap water back in. Tap water carries chlorine or chloramine that kills both your fish’s gills and your filter bacteria, so every drop of replacement water needs treating first. Chasing down water that will not clear
Sometimes you do everything right and the water still goes cloudy or green, and the color tells you which problem you have. A grey or white haze that appears in a young tank is usually a bacterial bloom, the colony catching up, and it clears on its own within a week or two if you feed lightly and leave it alone rather than dosing and fiddling. A green tint is an algae bloom driven by too much light and too much nitrate, and the fix is less light, less feeding, and firmer water changes rather than a chemical.
Overfeeding sits behind a huge share of murky tanks. Uneaten food rots, spikes ammonia, and feeds algae, so feed only what the fish clear in a couple of minutes and skip a day now and then. A tank that clouds every time you feed is being fed too much. Overstocking does the same thing more permanently: too many fish for the filter produce more waste than the biology can process, and the answer is a bigger filter, fewer fish, or both.
If the numbers on your test kit are wrong rather than just the look of the water, trust the numbers and act on them. Ammonia or nitrite above zero means an emergency water change and a check of what killed your bacteria, whether that was a tap-rinsed filter, a medication, or a dead fish rotting out of sight.
